Mammography
Early detection may save your life.
Every day we learn more about breast cancer and how to win the battle. One fact
is very clear – the distinct advantage is early detection.
Mammograms are the only test proven to decrease the chances of dying from breast cancer. If breast cancer is detected early, before it spreads, 96% of women will be alive five years later.
The earlier it’s discovered, the earlier it’s treated, the better your chance of survival. Studies have shown that, for women ages 50-69, having regular mammograms could reduce death from breast cancer by one-third.

What is a mammogram?
Mammography is the process of taking an X-ray picture of the breast and a mammogram
is the X-ray image itself.
This test can identify abnormalities such as very small lumps, areas of calcification,
or other changes before they can be felt by a woman or her physician.
Digital mammography, used at The Retreat, is better for imaging dense breast tissue
than a traditional film method because the doctor can digitally adjust the contrast
of the X-ray after it has been taken.
Who needs a mammogram?
• Women 40 and over should have an annual mammogram.
• Women under 40 with a family history of breast cancer or other concerns
should talk with a health care provider. Screening tests may be needed more often
and/or started earlier.
When is the best time to have a mammogram?
• Anytime is truly a good time, but if you have sensitive breasts, try having
your mammogram at the time of month when your breasts will be less tender.
• Try and avoid the week right before your period.
How do I prepare for a mammogram?
• Don’t wear deodorant, perfume or cream under your arms or on the breast
the day of your exam. These may interfere with the quality of the image.
• Wear a blouse or shirt as you will have to undress above the waist
for the exam.
• Please bring previous mammogram films from other facilities to your appointment.
Will the mammogram hurt?
The pressure caused by flattening of the breast may be slightly uncomfortable, but
should not be painful. The Retreat is happy to provide you with a Mammo Pad foam
cushion to ease your discomfort. Tell the technologist if previous mammograms have
been painful.
Breast Cancer Risk Factors
Significant factors
• Being female. 99% of breast cancer is diagnosed in women.
• Getting older.
• While family history does increase a woman’s risk, 80% of women are
surprisingly the first in their family to be diagnosed with breast cancer.
To reduce your risk of breast cancer:
• Maintain a healthy weight.
• Exercise regularly.
• Eat a low fat, high fiber diet.
• Limit your alcohol intake to one drink per day.
• Don’t smoke.
Selenia Digital Mammography System
The Selenia System from Hologic is a full-field mammography system that produces computerized breast images. Test results are clearer and much faster than film images and provide physicians with more timely and accurate information. Digital mammograms are recommended for premenopausal women and women with dense breast tissue.R2 Checker (Computer-Aided Detection)
Every single mammogram is “second-read” by a computer, highlighting areas in need of further attention by a radiologist.Warning signs of breast cancer
Often there are few if any warning signs of breast cancer until the condition has progressed beyond its early stages. That is why getting a mammogram is so important.Detectable warning signs
• A lump or thickening felt in the breast.
• Change in the size or shape of the breast.
• Discharge from the nipple.
• Nipple retraction.
When should I call my doctor?
If you experience any of the above warning signs, contact your doctor immediately.
Are there tests available instead of mammograms?
Ultrasound examinations are useful as a follow up to an abnormal mammogram or lump. They are not a screening test. Breast MRI can be used in addition to a mammogram for women at high risk for breast cancer.
