Focus on Healing
GOSHEN, Ind. - The Retreat Women's Health Center will welcome Sherry Lebed Davis on Sept. 11 when she comes to Goshen to discuss the Lebed Method, a therapeutic exercise and movement program known world wide.
Created by Lebed Davis and brothers, Dr. Marc and Joel Lebed, for their mother Rita who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1979, the Lebed Method uses movement for the healing and prevention of complications from Breast Cancer and related treatments such as radiation or chemotherapy.
Having been a professional dancer and teacher for 15 years, Lebed Davis and her brothers - both physicians - worked together to develop "The Lebed Method,' Focus on Healing."
Seeing this creative, therapeutic exercise program work for their mother, the siblings decided to take the program to others who were suffering as their mother had.
Lebed Davis began by working with breast cancer survivors at several major medical centers in Philadelphia, Pa. in 1980. By 1986, they had published two reports in the American Physical Therapy Journal: ""Physical Therapy and Dance in the Surgical Management of Breast Cancer" and "Dance: A Therapeutic Modality for the Breast Surgery Patient", presented at the Sixtieth Annual Conference of the American Physical Therapy Association.
Today, Lebed Davis is regarded one of the foremost authorities on the use of movement for the healing and prevention. Diagnosed with breast cancer herself in 1996, and with Lymphedema in 1999, Lebed Davis and her brothers continues to improve the program, introducing The Lebed Method, Focus on Healing for upper and lower Lymphedema in 2000.
The Lebed Method is now offered as a therapeutic recovery program in over 600 hospitals and centers worldwide for those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer or other forms of cancer, and those who currently or previously received radiation/chemotherapy treatment.
Movements used in the program are also beneficial for senior citizens and those with chronic disorders such as Arthritis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson's and other illnesses.
Receiving worldwide attention for its successes, The Lebed Method program has been published in medical journals, many national publications and featured on such shows The Today Show, Lifetime Live and the BBC.
On Sept. 11, The Retreat Women's Health Center is inviting the community to attend "Focus on Healing through Movement and Dance" with Sherry Lebed Davis from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at The Retreat Women's Health Center, 1135 Professional Dr., Goshen IN.
Lebed Davis will lead a discussion on the Lebed Method, lymphedema and cancer, as well as demonstrate her therapeutic movement program. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing to participate in the movement demonstration. The evening will conclude with book signings and giveaways for participants.
After the community discussion on Sept. 11, Lebed Davis will remain in Goshen Sept. 12 -14 offering her professional program at The Retreat for those interested in becoming certified in the Lebed Method. Laura L. Morris, MD, FACS, breast surgeon and Medical Director of The Retreat Women's Health Center is herself an assistant medical director for the Lebed Method, often recommending the therapeutic program to her patients.
