The Retreat "supports" Breast Cancer Awareness

GOSHEN, Ind. - Breast Cancer Awareness month begins Oct. 1, and The Retreat Women's Health Center is doing something a little different this year to show its "support."

From now through the end of October, the lobby of The Retreat Women's Health Center, 1135 Professional Dr., Goshen, will showcase dozens of bras - each decorated by a member of the staff for the Retreat's first-ever Bra Decorating contest.

"We wanted to do something unique this year during National Breast Cancer Awareness month," said Laurie Busby, Executive Director of The Retreat Women's Health Center. "Diagnosing breast cancer early makes all the difference. Anything we can do to draw attention to Breast Cancer Awareness and early detection is terrific."

In fact, said Busby, for the staff at The Retreat, it was the importance of mammograms that was the inspiration behind many entries -- including one entry covered in Life Saver candies with the slogan, "Mammograms are real lifesavers." Another decorated with dog biscuits, reads "Mammograms aren't as 'ruff' as Breast Cancer. Be your own best friend and get a mammogram."

The decorated entries will remain in The Retreat lobby until Oct. 24, while the community is invited to come in and vote for their favorite. The display will continue through the final week of October, with the winning bra featured in a special location inside the lobby.

"The entries are just fantastic," Busby said. "I don't know how the community will choose which one gets their vote."

Each vote costs 25 cents, with money raised going to HeartStrings Sisters, a support group for women with breast cancer started at The Retreat that also provides mammograms for un- or under-insured women. HeartStrings Sisters is a one-to-one support system that connects newly diagnosed breast cancer patients to breast cancer survivors.
